Maximilian sunflower occurs primarily in the prairie region of western Minnesota on sandy soil in full sun. It can usually be distinguished by it's relatively long, narrow leaves that are somewhat folded along the midrib, and curve downward. Its rhizomes are short, and it spreads mainly by seed.
